Pesmel will supply a fully automated logistic and high-bay storage system for wire rod coils to Danieli & C. Officine Meccaniche S.p.A. The delivery will be an integrated part of a new wire rod mill built in Udine, Italy by ABS (Acciaierie Bertoli Safau S.p.A.), a subsidiary of Danieli & C. The mill, with a total investment of EUR 200M, will serve as a state-of-the-art showroom for Danieli’s rolling mill equipment for their customers.
The ABS mill will utilize the latest process technologies with an annual rolling capacity of 500,000 tons. The mill will start operations in 2020, the first rolling tests being scheduled for during the second quarter. Industry 4.0 technologies will be applied extensively throughout the mill processes.
Pesmel’s storage system is designed to handle 150,000 tons of high-quality coils annually, delivered mainly for the automotive industry. The system is controlled by Pesmel’s proprietary WSM (Warehouse Management System) which will enable smooth material flows and high storage efficiency.
The high-bay storage functions both as an intermediate store for coils going to annealing as well as as a dispatch storage for customer deliveries using trucks and trains. The coils are transferred to and from the storage with a carriage system featuring a range of coil cars. The storage has an extensive sorting ability, which is essential in view of the high number of product grades. The WMS ensures that each coil is in the right place at the right time. Industry 4.0 technologies enable instant access to up-to-date production data and machine availability and, in addition, they provide information for detection of preventive maintenance needs.
Pesmel’s high-bay storage will be one of the first deep lane solutions in the world for wire rod coils, as traditional systems have been based on floor storages operated with overhead cranes or multi-aisle ASRS storages with cantilever racking.
“In the deep lane high-bay storage, four coils are stored in the same channel in six levels, enabling optimum space utilization. Storing capacity will be 11,400 tons (approximately 3,800 coils) in a 5,000 m2 area, with maximum throughput of 82 coils in and 37 coils out in one hour. This type of storage is also very flexible and easy to expand in the future.” says Pesmel’s Sales Manager Jouni Räisänen.
The system was optimized for the mill using 3D-animation and simulation during the design phase.
“These tools are a great asset in defining the storage capacity and functions in such a challenging and versatile case.” concludes Mr. Räisänen.
