Aluminum alloys and semi-finished products producer Kamensk-Uralsky Metallurgical Works (KUMZ) in Russia has purchased four Pesmel sheet packing lines. The lines will start operating in the Autumn of 2018. One fully automated packing line can pack up to 25,000 tons of sheets annually. Aluminum sheet & plate packages are delivered to customers in Russia and abroad, one of the most important customer groups being the aerospace industry with customers like Boeing, Airbus, and Bombardier Aerospace.
Founded in 1944, KUMZ manufactures and sells semi-finished aluminum products. Pesmel’s packing lines are delivered to a new unique modern rolling complex in Kamensk-Uralsky, Sverdlovsk Oblast, where KUMZ is located. KUMZ is one of the most significant companies and experts in aluminum alloys in Russia. The total delivery includes three fully automated sheet packing lines for 6 to 12 meter sheets and one manual line for special 32-meter-long sheets. Automated packing will replace current manual operations, significantly increasing the efficiency and packing quality. One automated packing line requires only 3-4 operators for system monitoring and packing material filling.
Product handling is easier and more gentle with automated functions, as the aluminum sheets are very thin and vulnerable to dents. At the packing line, the sheets are unstacked one by one and laminated or oiled as needed. In re-stacking, paper is placed between every sheet, after which the stack is folded with plastic. The stack is then palletized, strapped, and labelled. Altogether, there are tens of different packing codes coming from either from the mill system, or defined by the operator.
In this case, the customer’s needs and the supplier’s offering met each other perfectly, as Pesmel’s technical solution together with similar sheet packing references convinced KUMZ to invest in automated packing.
