Digitalisation and automation are profound trends that prevail despite economic uncertainties as they have the potential to contribute towards increased efficiency in industrial operations over the business cycles. This paper discusses enhancement of the supply chain in the metal industries through optimizing in-mill logistics and goods transportation. Implementation of automated material flow combined with applications of digitalization is demonstrated through examples where turnaround and waiting times can be greatly reduced.
