Pesmel to supply Outokumpu with automated coil and slit coil packing lines

Outokumpu has selected Pesmel for delivery of horizontal coil packing line and vertical slit coil packing line for their stainless-steel mill in Tornio to satisfy increased packing demands. The solution is expected to be operational at the end of June 2026.

Tornio is the only fully integrated stainless-steel facility in the world with annual production of 1.2 million metric tons. The mill’s products are used in household appliances, cars and railroad cars, as well as in chemical and pharmaceutical plants. Packed coils are transported to Tornio harbor located at the plant area and shipped directly to customers or Outokumpu’s finishing line in Terneuzen in the Netherlands.

Pesmel’s new solution replaces the existing packing lines that Pesmel supplied Outokumpu with in the ‘90s, and the old lines will be dismantled before installing the new ones in the same area. One of the most important requirement Outokumpu had for the new packing line was sustainable packaging. And for example majority of the wrapping and protection material is made from carton for easy recycling.

Operational description

Pesmel’s automated coil packing line includes full moisture protection using Through-Eye Wrapping (TEW) with crepe paper and stretch film, which guards against inner moisture and outside humidity. For mechanical protection carton is used for outer and inner diameter corner protection, outer dimension, and inner dimension body wrapping. After applying moisture and mechanical protection the coils are palletized, strapped, weighed and labelled.

In the beginning of the automated vertical slit coil packing line the coils are palletized and stacked. The line uses wooden pallets and carton covers. The palletized slit coil stack is transferred for axial stretch film wrapping, strapping, weighing, and labelling.
